Environment & Character Painting Workflow

Do you tend to shrink away from putting characters in your illustrations? I know I do. But what I've learned over the years is that it's better to start somewhere than never start at all. I put this off for years in my workflow, opting for 3d models or photos because my character drawing skills are a little on the sub-par side.

But in this video, I show you how you can break free from this character-less prison and start bringing your ideas to life. It's not going to be perfect at first, but as many self help mentors will tell you, done is better than perfect.

As environment-focused or specialist artists, it's really useful to at least be able to put some kind of character art into your workflow. You'd be surprised how many more jobs you'll get and how it can inject much more life into your paintings.

We'll also cover the creation of a rocky environment which has a nice painterly look and talk about how to make it look three-dimensional and avoid that flat cut-out feeling.

What you'll get:

  • 1 x 2.5 hour sped-up video, narrated over.

  • 1 x 30 minute video going over some key principles

  • My cloud/smoke photos brushes. Only one brush and one smudge brush, making it very easy to make awesome concept smoke!

  • A 2000px PSD with absolutely all my layers in (there's a lot!)

  • Step-by-step Jpegs of my process

  • Screenshot of my reference (also note that extra reference, albeit small, is included in the PSD folders)

*Assumes a working knowledge of Photoshop.
